Gerald Ciolek just missed his second season victory in the second stage of the Volta ao Algarve. The Milram riders just beaten out by Spaniard Koldo Fernandez (Euskaltel) and Manuel Cadoso (Liberty Seguros) after 183.5 kilometers from Lagoa to Lagos. With his stage win, Fernandez took the overall lead of the Portugese stage race.

„The team supported Gerald very well in today's finale,“ said Directeur Sportif Christian Henn in praise of his riders in Portugal. „The main assignement today to bring Gerald in optimal position. The guys did that perfectly and Gerald topped it off with his third place finish,“ Henn added. On the ten-percent steep finale, the Milram sprinter had to give way only to Koldo Fernandez and Manuel Cadoso of Portugal. „Shortly before the finish Gerald had too large a gear, but we can be satisified with the results.“

Up to the finale, Cervelo TestTeam had a lot of work to do. On the hilly terrain, a four-man breakaway group rode away with a lead of up to 6:38 minutes. Together with Team Astana, Cervelo cut into their advantage and caught the last two escapees, Preben van Hecke (Topsport Vlaandere) and Herve Duclos-Lassalle (Cofidis) only ten kilometers before the finish line.
