Against the splendid backdrop of Lake, an excited Ivan Basso smiles in front of cameras and videocameras: his stop is going to end. «For somebody who is as keen on the sport as me, cycling make your dreams come true, » admits Basso. «I’ve worked really hard for two years, and followed a targeted training programme to bring me back up to the top level. Now I just want to get back out there and experience the thrill of the race. »

It’s been a special day for Ivan Basso, and also for his new team, Liquigas. President Paolo Dal Lago described the team’s excitement about having Ivan onboard: «As soon as we started talks with Ivan we realised what a great person he is as well as a great cyclist. He has paid for his mistakes and is now ready to start winning races again: we are absolutely convinced that we have made the right choice. Liquigas, like Ivan, loves cycling: we are determined to keep trying to improve this sport for many years to come. »

Team manager Roberto Amadio was the first to try and get the Varese champion to join the team. He also said that Ivan’s undeniable talent was not the only reason for signing him up: «I always knew that he was a true professional, but then I also discovered that he is more dedicated than most. We really believe in him and from January we will start training in earnest for the Giro d’Italia, our main goal: Argentina, California and Tirreno Adriatico. We’ll take a short break in early summer and then get back into it with the Italian races in August. Then finally the Vuelta and, if Ballerini agrees, the World Championships in Mendrisio. » Amadio emphasised that Liquigas is all about clean racing «it’s an important part of our philosophy. This is why we are adopting a new in-house system certified by Wada and Uci. There’s no place for who want be clever».

But don’t worry, you won’t have to wait until 2009 to see Basso back in an official race – he’s competing in nine days’ time. «The team has given me a gift, » added Ivan «They have decided to let me race in the Japan Cup. I’ll be starting the race in great condition and with lots of motivation. Many things can influence the outcome of a race, and I’m definitely not going just for the ride. I can’t wait to meet my team-mates and kick-start the cycling life again».
