Tour of California Stage 1 Cancelled
South Lake Tahoe: As earlier reported Stage 1 which was supposed to start at 10:30 this morning was postponed. Then at around 11:30 it was "game on" for a modified, shortened 50 mile stage starting at 1:15. While it was still snowing, somewhat heavily at times, the roads around the start were still clear. Reports kept on circulating in the media room that conditions were not as good around the shortened course. Roads which were clear one moment would be instantly covered in snow when winds shook the tall pines and caused them to dump their load of snow on the road.
Nevertheless it was "game on" so media bundled up, and the staff made their way to the start line. Riders wisely waited as long as they could in their heated team buses before they came out to sign in. All riders were bundled up except one brave (insane) member of the Jelly Belly team who was just wearing shorts. Some riders were sporting newly acquired snow gear; one racer still had the price tag on his recently purchased jacket. As the riders came up to sign in the weather in the start area got noticably colder and windier with the snow returning in earnest.
